Councillor Corner

Cllr. Alex Sims

I was born and brought up in Briton Ferry before moving to Cimla in 2001. I continued to attend my local Briton Ferry primary school before attending Dwr Y Felin Comprehensive School and then Neath College. On completing my A Levels I attended Aberystwyth University where I graduated with a degree in French & Spanish.

I spent two years teaching English abroad, firstly in inner city Paris comprehensive schools and then a technical college in the French countryside. On returning to the UK I worked in a language school in Cardiff. After my experiences working in France under a French Labour government, I joined the Labour Party on my return to the UK.

I worked for a rail company in their community relations department, travelling across Wales to speak to politicians, businesses and local communities about how access to the railway impacted their lives.

I then went to work for the trade union UNISON as their Policy & Campaigns lead in Wales where I designed and orchestrated campaigns on increased pay for NHS staff as well as the impact of austerity on local authorities in Wales.

I currently work as a researcher in the Welsh Parliament.

It was a privilege to be elected to the Council in 2017 to represent the people of Penrhiwtyn and I enjoy serving with my fellow councillors to help make Neath a happy and vibrant place to live and visit. As part of my responsibilities as a councillor, I represent the Council as a director of Neath Inspired Ltd.
