Cecil Griffiths Commemorative Plaque

Published: 04 July 2018

In October 2016, Neath Town Council were approached to consider sponsoring a commemorative plaque to celebrate the life and achievements of Cecil Griffiths.

Cecil was an award winning Gold medal winning runner who was born and lived in London Road Neath. Unfortunately, Agincourt, his family home was demolished to make way for the new road configuration at the end of London Road and Stockham's corner.

There was interest from the community who wished to celebrate and commemorate Cecil’s achievements in the form of a 'blue' plaque which Neath Town Council wholeheartedly supported .

As the Council couldn’t place a plaque on his house, Celtic Leisure have granted permission to erect the plaque in his memory at the Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre. This is where his first ‘friendly’ race took place in 1915 when he was just 15 years of age, so it is very fitting for the commemorative plaque to be located at the race track where it all started for Cecil.
