Councillor Corner - August 2020

Cllr. Mrs Jan Lockyer

Jan was born in Neath and was brought up in Harle Street where she now lives with her husband Alan. They have 4 children between them, now all grown up with children of their own.

After leaving school at 16 years of age with 9 O’levels Jan started her career Local Government in the Education Dept of the then Glamorgan County Council, then following reorganisation to West Glamorgan CBC and then to Neath Port Talbot CBC. During her career Jan gained her Degree in Child Protection. Jan retired 5 years ago at 62 years after 40 years in Education (she took 5 years out to look after her 2 young children)
Since retiring Jan has become a JP, a role she finds so interesting and rewarding she is sorry she didn’t do it sooner.

Jan became a member of the Labour Party at a young age but was not an active member until much later. In 1999 she was proud to become the Neath Town Councillor for Llantwit and Merra Ward. She was honoured to represent the town of Neath twice as Mayor in 2004/5 and 2015/16. She is currently Deputy Leader of the Council.

Jan has a keen interest in local events and was a member of NAOS for several shows. She continues to support the Arts, but from the audience these days!

The last 9 years have been very productive as Jan and Alan have gained 8 grandchildren, Harri, Lily-Rose, Milo, Isaac, Joseph, Harry,Willow and Oliver ! Family life is important to Jan and she enjoys spending as much time as possible with the children and her labradoodle Ruby-Baby.  Her hobbies include gardening, reading and touring. She is always keen to visit other towns, villages and cities in the UK and France in her touring caravan but always relishes coming back her to her beloved town of Neath.
